Which cable tray material is suitable for Zone 1 hazardous areas in refineries?

In Zone 1 explosive atmosphere areas, FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) cable trays are the preferred choice because they are non-conductive and non-sparking — eliminating any risk of electrostatic discharge or spark generation. Aluminium cable trays are also acceptable in Zone 1 as aluminium is non-sparking. For Zone 2, properly earthed hot-dip galvanized steel trays are generally acceptable per OISD standards.

Do you supply cable trays for OISD-compliant refinery projects?

Yes. Our cable trays for refinery applications are supplied with full material test certificates (MTCs) for steel grade (IS 2062), zinc coating (IS 4759/ISO 1461) and FRP resin specifications. We can provide third-party test certificates from CPRI, NABL-accredited labs and TPI agencies as required by OISD and PMC specifications.

What earthing provision do cable trays in refineries require?

All metallic cable trays in refineries require continuous earthing bonding throughout the cable tray run. We supply earthing clamps, bonding connectors and earth tail lugs as accessories. For FRP trays, a separate earth conductor is run inside the tray. Our team can advise on earthing design as per IS 3043 and IEC 60364.
